Steps to Rebuilding Your Home and Life
ReplantingThese are some suggested steps for those who have recently had their homes destroyed by the Orange County wildfires. Please bear in mind that each situation is different, and these guidelines are intended for informational use only.
  1. For immediate emergency food, clothing, shelter and medical assistance to needy individuals and families, contact the American Red Cross at 1-866-GETINFO (438-4636). The Salvation Army provides a variety of services including help with food, household needs, clothing and personal needs. For more information call 1-800-SALARMY.

  2. Quick-reference checklist to use after a fire strikes, from www.firesafety.gov.

  3. Additionally, FEMA offers a guide on returning your life to normal beginning within the first 24 hours - including knowing where to begin and who to contact.

  4. Apply for aid with FEMA at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or 1-800-462-7585 (TTY) for the hearing and speech impaired. You may also register online here. Use the Disaster Recovery Center Locator to find an accessible facility or mobile office where applicants may go for information about FEMA or other disaster assistance programs, or for questions related to your case.

  5. Recommendations for clean-up following wildfires are provided by the Emergency Management Bureau. Also released have been food safety precautions for fire impacted areas, coping with stress following the wildfires, a natural gas safety fact sheet (PDF), information about erosion control (PDF), information about helping children after a wildfire (PDF), and guidelines for saving family treasures from soot and ash.

  6. Planning for the future from CA.gov. Includes information on how to replace lost documents, get personal, financial and tax assistance, and more.

  7. Rebuilding after the disaster from CA.gov.

  8. Information on hiring a contractor is available from the Department of Consumer Affairs' Disaster Information Center.
Recovery Assistance
Southern California Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (SCVOAD) - This is a group of community organizations that meet on a regular basis in order to assist individuals and families recover from disaster.

Insurance Resources
The Governor's Office of Emergency Services recommends contacting your insurance company to report your loss. Ask your insurance agent or company representative to help you with your claim, and don't be afraid to ask questions. The California Department of Insurance can assist you with your insurance issues by calling 1-800-927-HELP (4357) or by visiting their website.

The American Red Cross has a partnership with Goodwill and Salvation Army to provide shopping vouchers during disasters. You can also donate clothing to these organizations, and mark them Red Cross/OC Wildfires. For more information, call 1-800-446-6394 (Goodwill) or 1-800-958-7825 (Salvation Army).
